December 2020 Newsletter

Dear Supporters and Friends of the Governor Morehead Foundation,

2020 has been a difficult year for us all. It has been especially challenging for the visually impaired and blind students at the Governor Morehead School. Imagine not being able to see well and now having to stand more than six feet away from someone just to be able to recognize them or to hear what they are saying, all while wearing a mask. GMS students come to the residential school from cities throughout North Carolina, with a variety of financial needs; some live without access to the Internet. Due to COVID-19 precautions the GMS students have been attending school virtually and it has been inspiring to be updated about how they are learning remotely. Watch this WRAL News Story.

The mission of the Governor Morehead Foundation is to foster the enlightenment of children and young adults of North Carolina who deal with vision-impairment by providing funding for life experiences, academic programs and vision services, staff enrichment, and initiatives of Governor Morehead School students both current and former.

Our Vision is in service to the Governor Morehead School so the students may achieve a more successful future. In 2019 the Foundation organized a Garden Party fundraiser at the home of one of our board members and GMS alumnus, Francisco Chavez. It was a wonderful afternoon with music, information, and gathering of new and long-time friends coming together to support the mission and vision of the Governor Morehead Foundation.

The Foundation also co-hosted a magical Christmas fundraiser on the GMS campus where supporters embraced the Holiday Spirit by singing and participating in a Silent Auction purchasing prizes large and small.

The funds the Foundation raised have led to positive outcomes:

  • During the previous school year, the funds paid for lodging for students participating at the Model
United Nations competition, the Eastern Music Festival, and the 2019 Senior class trip to Atlanta.
  • This past Spring, the Foundation secured an Epson 9890 inkjet printer 44” for the GMS Career Center.
  • Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the Foundation is supplying hot spots that will ensure students’
    connection to their remote learning.
  • During this Fall semester, the Foundation donated gift cards to GMS students’ families to provide
assistance with food and household supplies.
  • This November, after the postponement of the Graduation ceremony for the GMS Class of 2020, the
Foundation presented each graduating Senior with a wireless headset as a gift for their determination
    and resilience.

Visit our website and help us make a difference in the life of every blind and visually impaired GMS student
throughout the state by donating to the fine work of the Governor Morehead Foundation.

Sincerely,
The Governor Morehead Foundation
